The Fall and Rise of the Sing-along Pianist in London
The demand for sing-along pianists in London waned during the late seventies and gave way to other forms of entertainment. It has taken a long time for a revival of honky-tonk sing-along piano playing, but it has happened at last. It has become very popular again as pubs are now having Cockney Pie and Mash evenings and traditional pub entertainment.
My Work in the Area
The East End was always looked upon as being the Mecca of sing-along entertainment. This area and other parts of London is where I am mostly working as a sing-along pianist. This type of entertainment is now in great demand and I’m really enjoying this revival.
The Sing-long Pianist and London’s Pianos
There was a time when most pubs had a piano in them. Also, there were also people around who could bash a few good old tunes out of them. At that time a sing-along pianist would be able to arrive at a London pub and perform without needing to take any equipment. Unfortunately, a lot of pianos were destroyed and usually smashed to bits with a sledgehammer.
We now use digital pianos which are far more flexible. Also, pubs don’t have to be responsible for the tuning and maintenance of a real piano. Digital pianos sound great and can be as loud or as quiet as you like. Just to clarify, a normal upright piano isn’t loud enough for most modern pubs and can barely be heard in some situations. Another thing about digital pianos is that they can be set up anywhere, even outside in a beer garden. No London based sing-along pianist should be without a digital piano.
Other Venues and Events.
So far I’ve mentioned London pubs, but I also perform in other venues and I play the piano for many types of events. Some events feature a sing-along session as part of the entertainment. This can be preceded or followed with other styles of music.
When I play the piano for London based weddings, I often have to perform many styles of music. Weddings often need a different genre of music for each part of the wedding day. For instance, classical music is usually the first choice for a ceremony, while jazz is often the in-thing for drinks receptions. This can be followed by background music for the wedding breakfast and maybe a sing-along session in the evening. Luckily, I perform many styles of music including pop, rock, classical, Latin, blues, and jazz.
